Scope and Content

This series is divided into four subseries based on subcode: PA (Parks), PA001 (Cemeteries), PA002 (Monuments), and PA003 (Reservations). The material is arranged by alphanumeric subcode and thereunder by case file number.

This series consist of correspondence, memoranda, routing sheets, proclamations, statements, internet printouts, email printouts, talking points, press releases, fact sheets, newspaper clippings, fliers, reports, and drafts thereof. Correspondence includes letters to President Bush from members of Congress and the general public regarding the designation of lands as national parks or national monuments, responses to the general public from the Department of Interior regarding concerns about various parks and monuments, views letters from the Department of Interior making recommendations to President Bush regarding proposed national parks and monuments, and letters from the general public regarding memorials to victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks, including but not limited to, a designated gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery and a memorial park in New York City. A considerable amount of material, including letters from the general public, agency views letters, proclamations, supporting documentation about the monument lands, and press releases are present related to Governors Island National Monument, the National World War II Memorial, the African Burial Ground National Monument, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument (later renamed the Papahãnaumokuãkea Marine National Monument), and the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. Also present are a memorandum from President Bush approving the burial of the last known surviving United States Army veteran of World War I, Frank Buckles, at Arlington National Cemetery, and a memorandum directing the Secretaries of Defense and the Interior to study the potential Pearl Harbor National Monument. Draft statements included in this series consist of a tribute to former Senator Paul Coverdell, and a ceremony honoring the Navajo Code Talkers. Also present are fact sheets and handouts on the 14th National Marine Sanctuary, the National Parks Legacy Project, and Strengthening and Caring for America’s National Parks. Various National Park Service reports are present, as well as the 2007 Department of the Interior report "The Future of America's National Parks."
